Depending on where you live, severe weather may occur that can be damaging to your roof. In the northern states, snow and cold temperatures cause major concerns, while the largest contributor to roofing problems in the south is the heat. Because of this, it is important to weatherproof your home and roofing system to ensure it stands up to seasonal or extreme weather conditions.

In areas where snow is a concern, your roof may be subjected to accumulations of ice called ice dams. These ice dams occur when the sun melts the lowest layer of snow found on a roof against the shingles, and once this water runs down the roof’s shingles and into the gutters it freezes again, as the gutters aren’t warm like the rest of the roof.  As ice builds up in the downspouts and gutters, it prevents water runoff. When this occurs, water can leak through shingles and into your attic and home. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to prevent roof leaks due to ice dams.

First, to prevent leaks, it is important to place a water repellant layer below shingles when initially constructing your roof. De-icing cables should then be placed on top of the shingles, and they can be looped through your home’s upper gutters. To cover as much area on your lower roofing as possible, also place these cables in a zigzag pattern throughout the rest of the roof and run it down through the downspouts. You will also want to install adequate insulation into your attic to keep heat inside your home interior. This will also help to reduce changes in the temperature found on the roof which can ultimately prevent the need for a roof replacement.

Reinforcing your roof may also be beneficial in order to weatherproof your roof, and you can reinforce the bond by gluing your roof to the rafters. To do this, first cut the adhesive nozzle to a 45 degree angle, and be sure that the hole is large enough to get out a .25 inch bead of glue through the end. It is also important to ensure that you are working in a well-ventilated area during this part, as the glue will typically have a strong odor. Once the adhesive has been accessed, start at the top or peak of your roof and move your way down the roof edges. Be sure to apply the glue on each side of every individual rafter.
