A 3-tab shingle is a one foot tall, three foot wide shingle that has slots cut on one side to create the three tabs. After being nailed down, the next 3-tab shingle is placed over the top so the bottoms of the tabs come to the top of the slits of the previous shingle, offset so that the new slits hit directly between the original shingle’s slits.
When most people think of a shingle, they think of a twelve inch wide strip of composite material. The truth is, a single shingle is three feet wide, but is designed to look like three separate shingles. By using a single piece of asphalt to create multiple shingles, the overall strength of the shingles is greatly enhanced, making it much less likely to be taken off by wind or fall off after a snowfall.
